The RYA’s navigation and seamanship theory courses are designed to complement courses in the various RYA practical training schemes. Whether you are a sailor or a motor boater, our shorebased courses equip would-be and experienced skippers with enough knowledge, at least in theory, to go afloat and take charge of a yacht.

The Day Skipper Theory

A comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board, and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course.

Yachtmaster / Coastal Skipper Theory

An advanced course ideal for candidates for the Coastal Skipper practical course and Yachtmaster® Offshore exam. As well as having some provision for revising the Day Skipper shorebased course it covers more advanced skills in offshore and coastal navigation by day and night, pilotage and meteorology.

Weekend Chartwork (non RYA)

For those who choose to self study Day Skipper theory, we offer a two day short course in chartwork. This course is designed to teach the elements that are not easy to follow and where many who self study find difficulty. We cover understanding the chart, updates, vectors, dead recogning - DR, estimated position -EP, course to steer - CTS, GPS, chartplotters, deviation and variation.
